Diaper Rash

Diaper rash is any type of rash that appears on any part of the skin covered by a diaper. Nearly every child gets diaper rash at some point or another. Diaper rash is a result of a combination of bacteria from bowel movements and urine irritating the skin. Diarrhea can cause diaper rash in the majority of children as well. If rashes fail to get better in a short amount of time, it is possible they may get a yeast infection. When the rash turns bright red and raw, covers a large area and becomes surrounded by red dots, it has become a yeast infection.

Ways to take care of your child with diaper rash:

  • Change diapers regularly to keep the area dry and clean. Bowel movements can cause the majority of the skin’s damage.
  • Allow your baby’s bottom to get more air by keeping the diaper off as much as possible throughout the day. When the diaper is on, fasten it loosely so air can get between the skin and diaper.
  • Clean the skin with warm water; no soap.
  • Use creams and ointments. Unless the skin is dry and cracked, there is no need for diaper cream. When your child has diarrhea, use an ointment.
  • Bleach cloth diapers. Use regular detergent during the first cycle and then warm water and a cup of bleach during a second cycle.
